What I help with

Annuity options

Fixed annuities

A guaranteed interest rate for a set number of years, similar to a CD but often paying more.

Fixed indexed annuities

Growth linked to a market index, with protection so you don't lose money when the market goes down.

Guaranteed lifetime income

Optional income riders that pay you for life, no matter how long you live.

Rollovers

Move a 401(k), TSP, or IRA into an annuity the right way, without triggering taxes.

Common questions

Questions I hear often

Can I lose money in an annuity?

Fixed and fixed indexed annuities protect your principal from market losses. Withdrawing more than allowed during the surrender period can result in charges.

Can I get my money out?

Most annuities let you withdraw a portion each year without penalty. Larger withdrawals during the surrender period may have charges. I'll explain this clearly before you decide.

Is an annuity right for everyone?

No. Annuities are long-term products. I'll look at your whole situation and tell you honestly if one makes sense.

What is a surrender period?

Most annuities have a surrender period, often 5 to 10 years, when withdrawing more than the free amount allowed each year results in a charge. The charge usually gets smaller each year until it reaches zero. I'll show you the surrender schedule before you decide so there are no surprises.

How are annuities taxed?

Annuities grow tax-deferred, so you don't pay taxes on growth until you take money out. Withdrawals of earnings are taxed as ordinary income, and taking money out before age 59½ may also trigger a 10% IRS penalty. Annuities funded with IRA, 401(k), or TSP money follow the same tax rules as those accounts. Please confirm your situation with a tax professional.

What's the difference between fixed, fixed indexed, and variable annuities?

A fixed annuity pays a guaranteed interest rate. A fixed indexed annuity earns interest based on a market index, with protection so your money doesn't go down when the market does. A variable annuity is invested in market subaccounts and can lose value. I focus on fixed and fixed indexed annuities for clients who want growth with protection.

What happens to my annuity when I pass away?

The remaining value is typically paid to the beneficiaries you name, and it usually avoids probate. Your beneficiaries may be able to take it as a lump sum or spread payments out over time, which can help with taxes.

Can I roll my 401(k), 403(b), TSP, or IRA into an annuity?

Yes. A direct rollover or transfer moves the money without creating a tax bill or penalty when it's done correctly. I'll help coordinate the paperwork with your current plan so the money moves safely.
